BILBAO BIZKAIA DESIGN WEEK 2023

As our first challenge, we set out to create a space to empower future generations of designers to make conscious decisions about materials and become agents of change. This is how “From Waste to Fashion” came about, the first live sustainable fashion design competition.

An innovative initiative that invited participants to create garments from discarded materials: from textiles to biomaterials and everyday objects.

The event, held on 18 November at the Ballonti shopping centre, formed part of Bilbao Bizkaia Design Week, promoting more responsible practices within the sector.

The awards ceremony, at BBK Kuna, highlighted the connections forged between designers and various industry stakeholders, reflecting the collaborative spirit and commitment to sustainability that defined the entire experience.

From competitions to leagues...

In the Basque Country, we began with an individual competition as part of Bilbao Bizkaia Design Week 2023. That initial experience served as a starting point for something more ambitious.

From there, we decided to take a step forward: to turn the idea into a scalable and collaborative format. Thus was born the Euskal Liga 2024/25, a regional competition that travels to different cities, with a competition in each one and a grand final bringing together the best projects.

A league format to revitalise the region

We have evolved our model into a league format to maximise its impact. The competition is organised in two stages: first, we hold three regional competitions in the Basque capitals—Bilbao, Donostia and Vitoria-Gasteiz. The winning teams from each city go through to a grand final, where they represent their region.

Sustainability at the heart of everything

Sustainability is at the heart of the entire league. Beyond the competition itself, we create opportunities for learning and exchange through round-table discussions with experts, participatory activities and networking opportunities. An approach that combines creativity, knowledge and action.

Partnerships that drive change

Thanks to connections forged through previous projects, we have begun a partnership with the Basque Government’s Department of Trade. We share a common vision: to champion sustainability and strengthen local trade. This partnership has given rise to the Basque Country’s first sewing competition league.

We also have the support of the region’s leading trade associations: Bilbao Dendak, San Sebastián Shops and Gasteiz On. Their involvement is crucial, as it helps us connect with local businesses, industry professionals and resources such as materials, venues and publicity. We also work together to design initiatives that encourage public participation.
